How do I place a hold?

Use iBistro, the library's catalog, and your library card to request almost any title that we own. You may choose any of our libraries as your pick-up location except for the Auburn Avenue Research Library. We will notify you by phone or email when your Hold is available for you to pick up. You may have up to fifteen (15) active requests at a time as long as your card remains in good standing. Please stop by any of our libraries to make certain that we have your most recent email address and/or telephone number. Here's how:

  • From the library's homepage (www.afpls.org), click on the My Account link at the top right of the page.
  • Enter your user ID (your library card# without a space) and your PIN. Your initial PIN is CHANGEME.
  • Locate your item in our catalog then go to the left of the screen, click on the Details button.
  • To the left of the screen, click on the Place Hold button.
  • Choose a Pick-Up branch by clicking on the drop-down window.
  • Suspension Dates remain blank unless there is a time frame when you will not be able to pick up a hold item if it becomes available to you. For example, a date when you may be on vacation.
  • Click on the Place Hold button.

Renew Library Materials Online
• Access the library system's homepage: www.afpls.org.
• Click on "My Account" at the top of the page that comes up.
• Select "Renew my materials" from the choices you see.
• Enter your user ID (Library card number) and PIN. If you haven't personalized your PIN, use the word CHANGEME.
• Select the material you'd like to renew. Click "Renew Selected Items" or "Renew All"

You will see new due dates, and a message if something cannot be renewed. Note that some of your paperback items may not show on the list.

Q: Why Can't I Renew Some of My Items?
• You may renew most of what you've borrowed twice. If you need something longer, please contact us.
• You won't be able to renew a title if someone is on a waiting list for it or if it's in the new and popular section. If you'd like it again, you can place a hold on the item, or we will be happy to put your name on the hold list for you.
• It's possible that your card is blocked because you have material overdue or have fines. Please contact the Circulation Department at the Central Library (404-730-1824) or at your branch so that we can help you clear your account.
• You can also renew by phone, either by calling your branch or by using the Telelibrarian 24-hour automated voice system (404-730-1860).
For more information about A-FPLS renewal policies, see Borrowing & Returning Items.

How do I donate books to the Library?
We suggest that you contact the Friends of the Library organization at a library facility near you. When books are donated to a Friends group, the Friends first ask the Librarians to select donations that are needed in the Library's collection. The rest of the donated books and materials are sold by the Friends and the proceeds go to support Library services.
